Gibson GA88 Stereo Amplifier 1960 Tweed
A Rare Gem 💎
this 1960 Gibson GA-88 Stereo amp was originally meant for stereo use on the Es-345/55 models
it has two output transformers so it has to be plugged to two cabinets at all times. The Amp closes up into itself like a Russian doll, one cabinet fits into the other with the head on a tray inside the smaller cabinet. A real genius piece of engineering! The speakers are original Jensen P12p Alnicos with a recent professional re-cone and the cabinets are both restored, retweeded and re-lacquered with the original front grille cloth still intact. The Amp has had a few capacitors changed and one transformer (also late 50’s) for European use.
It is said that only 236 pieces were ever made between 1959-1961 with only 102 Pcs in 1960!
The amp is rated 18w and sounds very much like an old fender , it’s loud, chimey and super clear! Gibson was very late in the high powered amp game, when this amp came out people were already shifting interest towards the new piggy back fender amps.. so these high powered gibsons never really caught on.. they are also extremely hard to find in Europe.
